It's basically just doing the painting in layers! I go out in the morning take a high contrast photo
so there is lots of shadow and use that as the basis of the painting. then I kill the background of the cavas with a bunch of colour and paint black over top wherever the shadows are. It was bitterly cold out that morning so I hit it on top with some sketchy white paint to show the snow gusting around....its cool cause if you use a heavy amount of paint you get a shimmer affect on the painting from the light hitting it.

I wanted to paint over photos too... but isnt that mix media instead of painting. I always feel like i am cheating if i do that... but looking at your results, maybe i should just chill.

You rock, i suck!

Ah I don't think so..This painting along with almost all my paintings are painted from references not painted over photos! the mix media paintings I have or collage paintings are used in a different way. I'm not trying to paint over them. I'm trying to creat the mood I was feeling when i saw what I saw and sometimes that needs to be a photocopy of a picture I took with ink or paint over top. It's just about the image and how I related to it you know! It's funny cause the collage paintings I feel are actually harder to create..Paintings like this one is kinda like once you know how to paint what your looking at it's easy! Getting the style is hard but the basics are easy!

Thanks sweety. I was in no way meaning to demean your talent or choice of art style.. just stating my personal feelings when I myself am trying to do it. I guess it stems for me thinking i wouldnt be able to achieve the look from scratch which is different in your case which is that you do have the ability to do it if you wanted to. Anyway thanks for taking the time to reply at length.
